Chaltén full day: Desert Lake

Chaltén full day: Lago del desierto

Spectacular full-day tour in a framework of outstanding natural beauty where you will visit the town of El Chalten, the Canyon of Las Vueltas River and Lake Desert (Lago del Desierto) and you will have the possibility to get to the Huemul or Vespigniani glaciers.

The tour begins from your hotel in El Calafate at 7:30 am to, then, head towards the legendary Route 40. This route skirts the Argentinian Lake, crosses the Santa Cruz and La Leona Rivers and arrives, after 1 hour 15 minutes, at the old Hotel La Leona (almost a museum of Route 40). Afterwards, you continue along the Lake Viedma, having the Andes in the background and, before reaching El Chalten, you will stop at the viewpoint of the Viedma Glacier. From here you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic of the Viedma Glacier, the Andes and the flagship Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. After 3 hours on the bus and 220 km traveled, you will get to the mountain village of El Chalten.

The first activity is to visit the National Park Interpretation Center. Then, from our base at the Pudu Lodge in El Chalten, passengers will be transfered to another vehicle which will drive them 37 km through the Canyon of Las Vueltas River towards Lake Desert (this transfer is made without guide).

Upon arriving at Lago del Desierto, you can walk along its shores looking for a nice place for lunch or choose to make the hike to the Huemul Lake and Glacier in a journey of about 90 minutes with moderate difficulty (in this case you must pay ARS 100 per person cash in place due to access to private property fee). Other optional activities available at Lake Desert are sailing to Glacier Vespigniani with or without disembark; in these cases it is not possible to combine the sailings with a hike to the Huemul Glacier due to the time each activity takes. If you choose the sailing without disembark, it takes 40 minutes. If you choose the sailing with disembark, it takes 2 hours 30 minutes and includes a walk in the glacier area.

About 4 pm the return to El Chalten and the Pudu Lodge starts. Later, you visit the Chorrillo del Salto and, finally, you return to El Calafate at 8:30 pm.
